Shawn Levy makes crowd-pleasing movies both big and small, and has done so multiple times whether it was with the Night at the Museum movies, Real Steel, Date Night, or Free Guy. He is one of the most commercially successful directors around, and that will surely continue when he hits us with Deadpool & Wolverine later this month. It also made him an easy choice by Lucasfilm to direct a Star Wars movie, which has been in the works for a couple of years and now finally has a screenwriter attached.
First revealed by InSneider (via Deadline) is news that Jonathan Tropper will script Shawn Levy’s untitled Star Wars movie. The collaboration makes sense given that Tropper and Levy are frequent collaborators. Tropper is the author behind This is Where I Leave You, which became an adaptation directed by Levy. He also wrote Levy’s films The Adam Project (featuring Ryan Reynolds) and the Levy-produced road trip comedy Kodachrome. A busy guy, Tropper also created the Showtime series Banshee and Warrior.
This is a big step forward for Levy’s film, although details are still a mystery. Tropper has a knack for exploring complicated family dynamics with humor and heart, which suggests to me that he could be doing the same with Star Wars. Hopefully it’s not a Skywalker-related story because those family ties have been explored enough.
Lucasfilm has multiple projects in the works with Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu arriving on May 22nd 2026, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Daisy Ridley film expected on December 18th 2026, and an open slot on December 17th 2027 that could go to Levy.
