When we think of disaster movies, Twister is one of those that is first in mind. And for good reason; the original had a fun cast with Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton delivering kinetic performances. It had crazy stunts and wild set pieces, not to mention it introduced us to a daredevil culture most had never known existed. There’s a lot for the upcoming reboot Twisters to live up to, but every trailer we’ve seen suggests that it will.
First of all, you’ve got a great cast of rising stars in Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos. Powell is especially on fire right now, and he seems to be indulging in his cowboy storm chaser role in Twisters. There are also a lot more tornadoes to contend with causing maximum destruction, so we’re going to see how well director Lee Isaac Chung put the $200M budget to use.
Also in the cast are Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, Harry Hadden-Patton, future Superman David Corenswet, Daryl McCormack, Tunde Adebimpe, Love Lies Bleeding‘s Katy O’Brian, Nik Dodani, Kiernan Shipka, and Paul Scheer.
Here’s the synopsis: Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos, In the Heights) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.
Twisters opens in theaters on July 19th.
