- The Super Mario Bros Movie– $58.2M/$434.3M
Illumination and Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros Movie keeps racking up high scores. The $58.2M third weekend is the best ever for an animated movie. Worldwide, the film has $871M and now one has to wonder if $1B is a possibility.
2. Evil Dead Rise (review)- $23.5M
Evil Dead Rise, the latest revival of the Sam Raimi classic, opened with a terrific $23.5M. That’s just a couple of million short of the previous film, 2013’s Evil Dead, which is similar in tone although the two films aren’t really connected. Reviews have been strong all around, with Rotten Tomatoes scoring it in the 80s from both critics and audiences.
3. The Covenant (review)- $6.2M
Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, a war film about battlefield brothers-in-arms played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim, opened with $6.2M. I would’ve loved to have seen more promotion for this excellent film, which has received excellent reviews despite not really being a typical Ritchie movie.
4. John Wick: Chapter 4– $5.7M/$168.8M
5. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves– $5.4M/$82.1M
6. Air– $4.9M/$41.2M
7. The Pope’s Exorcist– $3.3M/$14.9M
8. Renfield– $3.1M/$13.6M
9. Beau is Afraid (review)- $2.8M/$3.1M
Leaping into the top 10 in its second weekend is Ari Aster’s bizarre nightmare comedy, Beau is Afraid, with $2.8M and an expansion of 961 theaters. While the buzz was certainly there, the predictably divisive reaction was also evident based on the middling reviews. Look, this is one for the die-hard Aster or Joaquin Phoenix fans, but those who aren’t willing to sit through 3-hours of the director’s deep-rooted issues won’t get into this at all.
10. Suzume– $1.6M/$8.4M
