Nintendo Sets ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Sequel For April 2026

It’s game on at Nintendo! Last year’s Super Mario Bros. Movie was one of the biggest hits of the year with $1.3B worldwide. That’s a crazy amount of money, and second only behind Barbie‘s $1.4B. Gee, you’d think Mario would’ve received an Oscar nomination or something. Yes, I’m bitter about that. Anyway, Nintendo has already moved on, and set a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie for April 3rd 2026!

Here’s the announcement from Nintendo’s beloved Shigeru Miyamoto!

Nintendo will once again be working with the folks at Illumination for the animation, and Universal who will distribute. According to Miyamoto, Nintendo and Illumination will be working closely together on a story that will expand the world of Mario. What does that mean, exactly? A Wario appearance, maybe? And can we get the greatest Mario character ever, Yoshi, in on the action, please?

According to Variety, directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will be returning, along with screenwriter Matthew Fogel. Presumably the voice cast of Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key will also come back.

Are you excited about more Super Mario movies? I know I am. The last one was among my favorites of the year. What characters would you like to see?
