Almost from the moment it premiered at Venice, Laura Poitras’ documentary All the Beauty and the Bloodshed was pegged as an Oscar contender. Now, with the film up for Best Documentary Feature, it has fulfilled those expectations. In just a couple of weeks we’ll find out if the powerful film about the opioid crisis is victorious, and a few days after that it will be available for all to see on HBO and HBO Max.
Poitras’ film tells two stories: that of legendary photographer and activist Nan Goldin, who in 2017 revealed she was recovering from a fentanyl addiction; and of the fall of the Sackler family, owner of the pharmaceutical giant Perdue Pharma and target of Goldin in her crusade against pharmaceutical companies for causing the opioid epidemic.
All the Beauty and the Bloodshed debuts on HBO on March 19th.
