- Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (Review)- $104M
Never count a Marvel movie down when it comes to opening weekend receipts, score one for the little guy as Paul Rudd’s third outing as the pint sized hero took the top spot. All of that being said I found myself questioning how to write this…I mean, $100m, that’s got to be a positive, right? Still, in the Marvel world barely breaking that $100M mark isn’t exactly setting records. Reviews be damned (except for ours, of course) I had a blast with this movie and as long as you go in without raised expectations I think you will to.
2. Avatar: The Way of Water – $6.1M
This still makes me unreasonably mad, how can the sequel to a movie with NO cultural impact outside of it’s box office take be this successful and for this long? After dropping to third in the past few weeks those damned blue cats have clawed their way back to the #2 spot
3. Magic Mike’s Last Dance – $5.4M/$17.9M
4. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish– $5.2M/$166M
5. Knock at the Cabin – $3.9M/$30.3M
6. 80 for Brady – $3.6M/$32.2M
7. Titanic – $2.2M/$12.4M
James Cameron, king of the re-release. I don’t have much to say about the double dip for Titanic, which is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to point out that the only reason Avatar beat Avengers: Endgame as highest grossing film of all time was through a series of re-releases like this. I told ya….I’m irrationally angry about this.
8. Marlowe (Review) – $1.9M/$2.6M
The only other new release this week to hit the top 10, Liam Neeson’s take on the classic noir detective character Marlowe wasn’t able to find it’s audience. 1940’s LA detective is just about my favorite sub-genre, so I really wanted to like this and felt that it could be L.A. Confidential good…unfortunately it ended up more like Hollywood Homicide
