NBA trailblazer Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton gets his big screen moment in the new film, Sweetwater. In 1950, Clifton was among the first African-Americans to play in the NBA, and the second to sign an NBA contract, laying the groundwork for what the sport is today.
Starring as Clifton is newcomer Everett Osborne, playing the athlete through his Arkansas upbringing, his service in the Army and fighting in WWII, to his time with the Harlem Globetrotters and Negro League Baseball. The 6′ 8″ Clifton was a natural athlete, and was eyed by the New York Knicks when their coach decided it was time to integrate. Even with the support of the NBA and many of its coaches, Clifton’s shot at history came with many challenges.
The film also stars Cary Elwes, Jeremy Piven, Richard Dreyfuss, and Kevin Pollak. Martin Guigui (9/11) directed as well as wrote the script.
Sweetwater opens in theaters on April 14th.
