Season 3 of The Mandalorian arrives this March, and honestly, it can’t get here soon enough. Feels like it’s been ages. However, fans may be disappointed to learn that someone won’t be coming back to the show. Composer Ludwig Göransson, who created the theme that has already become iconic in the Star Wars franchise, is moving on and won’t return.
The news was confirmed by Film Music Reporter, although no reason for the departure was given. Göransson composed the music for seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian, as well as some for The Book of Boba Fett. He composed the latter’s theme, but the spinoff series was actually composed by his collaborator, Joseph Shirley.
A similar situation is playing out on The Mandalorian now as it’ll be Shirley who takes over as composer on season 3. Göransson will still have an impact as his music will continue to be heard on the show.
It’s worth noting that Göransson is wildly in demand right now. He has been closely linked to Ryan Coogler ever since composing Fruitvale Station, and that partnership continued through Creed 1 & 2, and most recently Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Göransson dropped out of composing music for Creed III, turning the gig over to, you guessed it, Shirley.
The Mandalorian season 3 hits Disney+ on March 1st.
