‘Man Of Steel 2’ Script By Steven Knight Shot Down, ‘Batman Beyond’ Film Not Dead Yet

If there’s something to take away from all of these stories emerging about DC Studios’ future plans, it’s that we don’t know shit yet. How can we when James Gunn and Peter Safran only just started and they are in the midst of formulating ideas right now? Nothing has been set in stone by Warner Bros. Discovery, so literally everything should be taken with a grain of salt. The first news that we heard about Wonder Woman 3 being canceled was wrong, and it turns out Patty Jenkins walked away from it. Other reports have Man of Steel 2 being canned, and Jason Momoa possibly moving over to the Lobo role. Weird.

Going back to Man of Steel 2, THR has learned of other ideas they had in mind for Henry Cavill’s big comeback as Superman. Of course, we know he eventually showed up for a cameo in Black Adam, teasing a future showdown. A script was actually written by Peaky Blinders creator and Eastern Promises writer Steven Knight, but Warner Bros. didn’t really like it. While they sent him notes to help flesh the story out, Knight, who is super busy and in-demand, just walked away from the project.

Another option eyed by former DC Films chief Walter Hamada was a Crisis on Infinite Earths story, which would’ve been a massive crossover movie project for Cavill to star in. Just like the classic comics storyline, it would’ve featured multiple versions of popular heroes, similar to what’s being explored in The Flash with Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck’s versions of Batman, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, etc.

Finally, a recent report mentioned a canceled Batman Beyond film that would’ve featured Keaton’s older version of the Dark Knight. That film was being written by Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson, and may have featured a Batman/Catwoman romance (Michelle Pfeiffer return, maybe?). But that film is not dead. Not yet, anyway. According to THR, Hodson has been asked to stop working on it until Gunn and Safran figure out what they’re doing.

I feel like that last point is everything right now. Nothing is solid until Gunn and Safran have a plan and a goal in mind. When that happens, trust that Gunn will keep his many fans in the loop.
