Bradley Cooper is set to take on a role made iconic by the late great Steve McQueen! Deadline reports Cooper has signed to play San Francisco tough guy Frank Bullitt in Steven Spielberg’s new movie based on the classic cop character.
This new Bullitt film will have an original story penned by Josh Singer (Spotlight), and will not be a remake of the 1968 movie that starred Steve McQueen. McQueen’s son Chad and granddaughter Molly are on board to exec-produce.
Bullitt is largely remembered for McQueen’s unforgettable performance as the San Francisco cop who sets out to get vengeance on those who murdered a witness. The film has one of the great car chase sequences of all-time, one that has been emulated by other filmmakers through the decades.
This fulfills Cooper and Spielberg’s longtime desire to work together. They came close a few years ago on American Sniper, but Spielberg bailed and Clint Eastwood stepped in. Next up for Cooper is Maestro, which will be released by Netflix next year. Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans is in theaters now.
