More details have emerged on the Star Wars film being put together by Damon Lindelof, with Ms. Marvel‘s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directing. And it turns out this has been in the works for longer than we thought, and with more people involved than we knew. It sounds like Lucasfilm is going to put some actual elbow grease behind this one to get an actual movie on the screen for the first time since 2019.
According to an update from THR, last July saw Lucasfilm assemble a writer’s room to come up with a story that people might want to pay for and wouldn’t be divisive.
“The room held a two-week session in July and at the table were Patrick Somerville, who worked with Lindelof on Leftovers and then went on to create the buzzy Station Eleven; Rayna McClendon, a consulting producer on Lucasfilm’s own Obi-Wan Kenobi and writer on the company’s upcoming Willow series; and Andy Greenwald, the creator of the 2019 Rosario Dawson crime drama Briarpatch (on which McClendon was a story editor), among a couple of other writers.”
Also involved is Star Wars guru Dave Filoni, which makes sense considering he’s been the mastermind behind the franchise’s recent success. Justin Britt-Gibson, a writer on Guillermo Del Toro’s The Strain, was hired to co-write a script with Lindelof.
While there are still no plot details, the film will reportedly take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. It’s also possible that some previously-seen characters could appear. If this turns out to be a solo Rose film I’ll pee myself.
Lucasfilm has a date set for December 2025 which is the earliest the film could appear. With a handful of movies out there in various stages of development, Star Wars might be making its long-awaited comeback.
