It doesn’t seem to matter how many times The Addams Family gets revived, people flock to the crazy and kooky family’s macabre misadventures. We’ll see if that now extends to the new Netflix series Wednesday, which as the title suggests, focuses on the not-so-darling daughter of Morticia and Gomez.
Jenna Ortega, who has been killin’ it in horrors such as Scream, American Carnage, and X, looks fit for the role of Wednesday Addams as she navigates life at Nevermore Academy. How does the most twisted Addams fare when up against the social cliques of high school? About as well as one might expect. She also has to deal with burgeoning psychic powers and an apparent serial killer on the loose.
Also in the cast are Luis Guzman as Gomez Addams, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, and Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley. Gwendoline Christie (also in Netflix’s The Sandman), Christina Ricci, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, Joy Sunday, Emma Myers, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Georgie Farmer, Naomi Ogawa, and Moosa Mostafa co-star.
Tim Burton will direct all eight episodes, and judging by this trailer his fingerprints are all over this more than showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough.
Wednesday streams on Netflix beginning this fall.
The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.
