It’s taken longer than I’m sure Warner Bros. would’ve liked, but the DCEU is finally starting to take on a similar shape as the MCU. Successful hit films working in conjunction with various TV series spinoffs, such as Peacemaker, are drawing more fan attention than they’ve ever had. And that’s good news for a smaller film like Blue Beetle, which has just added a rising star to its cast.
Deadline reports What We Do In The Shadows breakout Harvey Guillén has joined the Blue Beetle cast. His role? That’s a mystery for now, but the part is said to be a key one. He joins star Xolo Maridueña, who takes on the role of Jamie Reyes, a teen gifted with a alien scarab that powers his extraterrestrial suit of armor.
*Update: The Wrap adds that newcomer Brazilian actress Bruna Marquezine will play Penny, Reyes’ love interest. Belissa Escobedo is on board as Milagros Reyes, Jamie’s younger sister.*
Guillén was recently seen in the horror-comedy Werewolves Within and the Prime Video series, Reacher. But he’s best known for playing human familiar Guillermo de la Cruz in FX’s vampire comedy What We Do In The Shadows.
Angel Manuel Soto will direct Blue Beetle, which should be entering production soon ahead of an August 18th 2023 release date in theaters.
