It’s a shame that we may have younger movie fans out there who don’t know who Sophia Loren is. Among the last of the true Hollywood stars and one of the greatest actresses of all-time whose career includes her role in Two Women that won her an Oscar for Best Actress, plus a Grammy Award win, multiple Golden Globes, and more, Loren is returning to the screen for the first time in a decade with The Life Ahead, a potential awards drama directed by her son, Edoardo Ponti.
Loren stars in The Life Ahead as Madame Rosa, a Holocaust survivor who gets by raising the children of prostitutes with whom she used to walk Italy’s streets. When she encounters the aspiring thief and Senegalese orphan, Momo (played by newcomer Ibrahima Gueye), Rosa reluctantly takes him in and the two enrich one another’s lives, despite the occasional butting of heads.
Loren’s last feature role as part of the stunning cast of Nine, while she also some Italian voicework in Pixar’s Cars 2. Otherwise, it’s been a long time since Loren felt like she wanted to make another movie, and it would be her son who inspired her to do so. She tells EW…
“I really love working with my son because we know each other very well. I love his way of directing me.”
The Life Ahead will have a limited theatrical run before hitting Netflix on November 13th. I can see them positioning this as their Roma for this awards season.
