The wait is finally over! A new Adventures of Tintin movie is coming. Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson have gotten their shit together and…what? This Tintin has nothing to do with their Oscar-nominated film from a decade ago? Well, that does take some of the steam out of this, unless you’re one of the millions who count themselves as a fan of Herge’s erstwhile journalist/detective.
This new Tintin movie won’t be CG-animated like the previous one. According to French site Figaro (via ThePlaylist), it will be live-action and directed by Patrice Leconte, who has directed some huge films in France including Ridicule, French Fried Vacation trilogy, and Monsieur Hire.
Lecoste says his film will be based on the story The Castafiore Emerald, which is a bit different from the typical globe-trotting Tintin story. This one finds Tintin, his loyal pup Snowy, and Captain Haddock investigating the theft of opera singer Bianca Castafiore’s emeralds. The serialized comic was published from 1961 through 1962.
While the director says he has already found who will play Haddock and Castafiore, no one has been cast as Tintin just yet. He may have some time, because apparently there are rights issues that need to be ironed out between Paramount France and the Tintin rights holders.
That last bit could have something to do with Spielberg and Jackson, who pop up every few years to remind us they are still working on an animated sequel. The deal they worked out was that Spielberg would direct the first one, while Jackson would take over the second, and so forth. Well, Jackson hasn’t lived up to his end of the bargain and there’s nothing that says he ever will.
