Don’t be confused. Yes, the Child’s Play franchise had a reboot only a year ago, but that was without the franchise creator Don Mancini for the first time. He went off to do his own thing, branching the killer doll’s story into a TV series, titled Chucky, that we now know will arrive in 2021. Not only that, but there’s so much murderous doll action that it will have not one, but two network homes.
A new teaser for Chucky reveals the series will air on USA Network and SYFY. Mancini’s show continues the original Child’s Play timeline, and brings back Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky, and Jennifer Tilly who came aboard with 1998’s Bride of Chucky as Tiffany Valentine.
SYNOPSIS: After a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies — and allies — from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.
It’s still inexplicable to me that of all things it’s Child’s Play which is big enough to sustain a reboot and a TV series at the same time. Well…I guess we’ll see if that turns out to be the case, right? The reboot did okay, making $45M on a budget of $10M, but has sparked little interest in a sequel. Mancini has his hands full if Chucky is going to be a hit on the small screen, and I’m curious to see if he can pull it off.
