Club Kid, the feature directorial debut of comedian, actor, writer, and Internet sensation Jordan Firstman, centers on a hard-partying club promoter who discovers that he has a son he never knew about. Sure, it sounds like a modern update of Adam Sandler’s Big Daddy, but there’s so much more to this adult coming-of-age story, from its heartfelt father/son story, to its warmhearted look at the queer NYC club scene. Most of all, Firstman is a revelation, especially to folks like me who only know of him from Sebastian Silva’s Rotting in the Sun (in which he plays a version of himself) and glimpses at Rachel Sennot’s HBO series, I Love L.A.
While attending the Middleburg Film Festival, I got to spend a few minutes chatting with Jordan Firstman about Club Kid. We touched on a lot in a short stretch of time, from the film’s origins to his own personal growth, to finding his brilliant young co-star, Reggie Absolom, and how he knew he was perfect for the role.
I also got to spend some time with actress and producer Colleen Camp, who plays the lonely neighbor Evelyn in Club Kid. Camp is a legend, known as much for her character roles as for her stroke behind the scenes. She’s a Hollywood power player, and we talked about that and how she first met Firstman. We also touched briefly on her uncredited cameo in Chris Rock’s latest film, Misty Green.
Club Kid opens in select theaters on November 6th. Check out the interviews below, and my review of the film here.
