- Other Mommy– $27.5M
Jessica Chastain’s return to horror, Other Mommy, won the weekend with $27.5M, despite poor critical reviews (18%) and audience reactions (47%) on RT and elsewhere. That said, there was a lot of buzz for the film based on those insane trailers that promised an unhinged performance by Chastain. She usually delivers the goods in this genre (Mama, It: Chapter Two) and fans are willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. It added another $17M overseas for a global debut of $45.1M.
2. Verity– $11.4M/$53.8M
The latest Colleen Hoover adaptation, Verity, fell 64% in its second week for just $11M, likely due to the 31% critical and just 71% audience scores it received. However, worldwide it has already cracked the $100M mark so it has to be seen as a modest success at this point.
3. Resident Evil– $8.3M/$138.5M
4. Heart of the Beast– $7.1M/$49.6M
After three weeks, the Brad Pitt/David Ayer survival thriller Heart of the Beast is a larger hit overseas than domestically. In total, $81M of its $131M worldwide total was from international markets.
5. The Social Reckoning (review)- $5.5M
We speculated on Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Network follow-up, The Social Reckoning, being a flop during a recent podcast episode. Turns out, we were right. The film, led by Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, and Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg, flopped hard with just $5.5M from 2,606 locations. Ouch. There just wasn’t the same interest in Strong’s performance as there was in Jesse Eisenberg’s fourteen years ago, and at this point there’s no curiosity about the impact Facebook has had on the world. We see it every day.
6. Forgotten Island– $4.5M/$30.2M
7. Primetime– $4M/$41.4M
8. Digger– $3.2M/$14.4M
Warner Bros. embarked on an interesting marketing strategy to boost numbers for Digger, one of the year’s biggest box office disasters. It leaned into the negative reviews and encouraged people to “decide for themselves.”, as if folks have money to pay for a movie already seen as a punchline. It didn’t work. Digger fell another 60%, and only has $35M worldwide after two weeks. By some estimates, it stands to lose the studio a whopping $250M overall, which has to have the new Ellison regime slapping itself.
9. Angel and the Badman– $2.06M
Angel Studios released Angel and the Badman, a remake of the 1947 John Wayne western classic. This one stars Zachary Levi, Neal McDonough, and Tommy Lee Jones. Reviews were harsh, with the film sitting at 23% critical on RT.
10. The Odyssey– $2M/$622.9M
