Thankfully, last year’s terrible Anaconda reboot (Seriously, what the Hell was that???) didn’t scare Hollywood away from snake movies for the long haul. Because then we wouldn’t have Beware Boiúna, which I have called the best killer snake movie ever made. Directed by horror maestro Mike P. Nelson, the film works by leaning into Amazonian folklore to create a truly terrifying movie monster, while also providing a character-driven story with thrills to spare. It also doesn’t hurt to have two fantastic horror veterans in front of the camera: Happy Death Day‘s Jessica Rothe and Feat Street‘s Kiana Madeira.
Beware Boiúna centers on a team of doctors on a humanitarian mission in the Amazon rainforest, who encounter the deadly snake of legend while trying to avoid the wrath of a man who is seeking revenge for a fatal tragedy.
I had the chance to speak with Rothe, Madeira, and Nelson about Beware Boiúna, which is open in theaters now. We talked about the challenge of shooting in the Amazon rainforest, and the help they received from the community. They also discussed the incredible snake handlers on set, genuine snake fears, and making a snake survival thriller that defies expectations. It’s a low bar, sure, but this film would be great even if the bar was much higher.
