Zack Snyder has been talking up a Director’s Cut, a “Snyder Cut”, of Sucker Punch for almost a decade. I’m sure somebody out there REALLY wants this to happen, because somehow there must be a better version of that movie. Not sure I buy that, and that comes from someone who defended it more than most. Snyder’s been talking a lot lately, following the world premiere of The Last Photograph (which I attended and reviewed), and he tells the Happy Sad Confused podcast that a new version is “definitely on the docket.”
A lot of what Snyder had to say sounds like wishful thinking, such as the idea that he can get the original actresses back to do additional ADR work. He says that he’s waiting for “some licenses to completely finish” before moving forward. In the past he’s said the additional footage has already been shot, so it shouldn’t be too difficult.
Here’s how Snyder previously described the fantasy film, led by Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jamie Chung, Vanessa Hudgens, and Jena Malone, as women in a mental institution who escape into action-filled alternate worlds as part of a plan to escape…
“It’s a protest movie in a lot of ways. It’s a movie about genre. I was asked at the time ‘Why did you dress the girls like that?’ and I’d always go ‘I didn’t dress them like that, you did.’ I always saw it as an indictment of, in some ways, popular culture. I think at the time I was criticized for it being the opposite, like, some sort of sexist rant. It was fun to make and I still love it to this day.”
It’s a female empowerment movie from a guy who has never been able to write women, so it was just a mistake all around. His latest film, The Last Photograph, has three women in it and all they do is show their tits. The female gaze is not his strong suit.
