It’s been years since Marvel first started talking about a project centered on Nova, the popular New Warriors member, Rich Rider. Things started coming together as a Disney+ series, but last year we learned it was one of multiple projects shelved as streaming output was slashed. But now Nova is back in development as a feature film, with Michael Waldron tapped to write the script.
Waldron has become a Marvel Studios favorite in recent years, having created the Loki series and written Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Before the Russo Bros. returned and everything changed, Waldron had written the screenplays for Avengers: Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. He also wrote Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie that will never happen. Outside of Marvel, Waldron created and wrote the wrestling series Heels, and co-created the Glen Powell football comedy, Chad Powers.
Nova aka Richard Rider, is a member of the intergalactic police force known as the Nova Corps, seen prominently in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. In the comics he’s also been an Avenger and a member of the New Warriors, sporting one of the most distinctive superhero costumes ever.
Waldron’s connection to Powell could be crucial here. Nova is often portrayed as a comedic character but a good soul, similar to Star-Lord in a lot of ways. It would be the perfect type of role for Powell, who is best at playing those types of characters. [Deadline]
