Hideo Kojima Partners With The ‘Barbarian’ Team On A Live-Action ‘Death Stranding’ Movie

Last week at The Game Awards, video game creator Hideo Kojima revealed, much to our surprise, that a sequel to his hit 2019 game Death Stranding was in the works. Kojima, the mastermind behind the Metal Gear Solid franchise, makes some of the most cinematic games ever. And so it makes sense that a live-action Death Stranding movie would also be in development, announced today by Kojima Productions and Hammerstone Studios.

In Death Stranding, you basically play an Amazon delivery courier in a post-apocalyptic United States. A cataclysmic event has opened up a breach or portal from our world and the afterlife.

One of the cool things, the only cool thing in my humble opinion because I loathed that boring game, is the actors who star in Death Stranding. You control Sam Porter Bridges, a character portrayed by Norman Reedus, while the cast includes Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Nicolas Winding Refn, Guillermo del Toro, Troy Baker, Tommie Earl Jenkins, and Lindsay Wagner. The newly-announced sequel looks as if it will focus on Seydoux’s character, Fragile.

It’s unclear if any of those actors will appear in the movie, but you can bet that’s on the wish list. For now, we know that Kojima will be partnering with Alex Lebovici’s Hammerstone Studios, who were behind the recent horror hit, Barbarian.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” said Hideo Kojima in a press release. “This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing “Death Stranding” to the big screen.” Lebovici had a comment of his own. “We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation,” he said. “Unlike other big-budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic “Hideo Kojima” production.”

So let’s see if this actually happens. Kojima has been developing a Metal Gear Solid movie for ages, with Oscar Isaac attached to play Solid Snake. It’ll be funny if a Death Stranding film happens first.
