Leah McKendrick earned sky-high reviews for Scrambled, a film that explored with humor what it means to be a parent, and whether one is ever truly ready. Now McKendrick is back with Voicemails for Isabelle, which explores more weighty themes but also the romantic happenstance that rom-com fans are looking for.
Zoey Deutch stars in Voicemails for Isabelle as Jill, who is still grieving the loss of her sister. To maintain that connection, Jill leaves deeply personal messages for Isabelle at her old phone number. The catch is that Isabelle’s number now belongs to Wes, played by Nick Robinson, who hears these revealing messages and comes to know Jill in ways few ever could.
The film is written and directed by McKendrick, who also has a small role for herself. Also in the cast are Ciara Bravo, Nick Offerman, Lukas Gage, Harry Shum Jr., Megan Danso, Gil Bellows, Toby Sandeman, and Spencer Lord. Este Haim co-wrote the score with Amanda Yamate.
SYNOPSIS: Jill copes with her sister’s death by leaving her voicemails chronicling her chaotic life in San Francisco. When the number is unknowingly reassigned, an elusive Austin real estate agent begins receiving the hilariously confessional messages.
Voicemails for Isabelle hits Netflix on June 19th.
