With multiple nominations at the Oscars and Golden Globes, not to mention $334M at the box office, The Wild Robot is one of DreamWorks Animation’s most successful films. And it’s no surprise that it is eager for more. The Wrap reports that a sequel, titled The Wild Robot Escapes, is officially in the works.
Chris Sanders will return as writer, but he won’t direct the sequel. Instead, it’ll be a pair of directors, Troy Quane and Heidi Jo Gilbert, behind the camera. Quane was one of the directors on Netflix’s incredible animated feature, Nimona, which itself earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. Gilbert was head of story on the first movie.
The Wild Robot Escapes is based on author Peter Brown’s 2018 book, which finds Roz escaping a dairy farm and, with the help of Brightbill, attempting to return to the island.
It’s unclear if Lupita Nyong’o will return to voice Roz, but it’s hard to think of the titular robot without her.
Presumably, if this film is a hit, too, Dreamworks will go on to adapt The Wild Robot Protects, which finds Roz risking all to save the island from a poison tide.
