Last month, I reported on Spotlight director Tom McCarthy’s first movie since 2021’s Stillwater. Then reportedly titled The Statement, the film was to star Paul Rudd, Paul Giamatti, and Peter Sarsgaard. Well, that was mostly right. Deadline has an update, stating that the now-untitled project will add Evan Peters, Tatiana Maslany, John Turturro, Amy Ryan, and Jason Clarke to the cast. As for Sarsgaard, well, he’s no longer mentioned.
Set up at Sony Pictures Classics and based on the Nathaniel Rich book, Losing Faith, the film the dark dramedy is set at a “beachside resort in Florida in 1980, 20 experts gather for a weekend conference on a global issue that is starting to gain traction: the effects of Co2 emissions on the climate. This group of scientists, activists and policymakers have one simple mandate from Congress — write a statement about what to do. Easier said than done.”
Filming is expected to begin next month. McCarthy will direct and adapt the screenplay. Previously, he directed the Best Picture winner Spotlight and also won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Before that, he directed three indie gems in a row with The Station Agent, The Visitor, and Win Win. He also co-wrote the screenplay to Pixar’s Up.
Tough to argue with that cast, maybe the best McCarthy has ever put together. Look for this one to arrive in 2027.
