The horror playing field is plentiful with up ‘n coming directors making their mark on the genre. Curry Barker has already begun making his mark with Obsession, which has been one of the buzziest thrillers playing the Midnight festival circuit since it premiered at TIFF last year. Trust me, I’m still kicking myself that I skipped out on it.
Obsession is one of those “be careful what you wish for” flicks, sorta like the old Wishmaster movies if you remember those. It stars Teen Wolf actor Michael Johnston as a guy who uses a magical novelty toy to wish that his best friend would fall in love with him. He gets his wish, but the price to pay for it is darker than expected.
Also in the cast are Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter.
Barker is a hands-on kind of filmmaker, and not only directs the film, he wrote the script and did the editing, as well.
SYNOPSIS: After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.
Focus Features will release Obsession in theaters on May 15th.
