Ever wanted to go back to a time when Tom Green was relevant (!!!) and somehow he was dating Drew Barrymore? Me neither, but it could happen. Last week, THR reports that Sony Pictures had hired Crazy Rich Asians and The Proposal writer Pete Chiarelli to script a reboot of the Charlie’s Angels franchise for the modern era. And while that doesn’t necessarily scream throwback to the early 2000s, Jeff Sneider’s report does.
Over at The InSneider, it’s being reported that Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu are expected back for this new Charlie’s Angels. And if it can somehow be worked out, like figuring out how her character can return from the dead, then Demi Moore, who played an ex-Angel-turned-villain, might come back, too.
It’s unclear if the trio would be leading the film or just making cameos. They starred in two successful adaptations of the iconic female-led 1970s TV series, both directed by McG in 2000 and 2003. There has already been one failed reboot in 2019, directed by Elizabeth Banks and starring Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska, and Naomi Scott.
Barrymore is said to be behind this new Charlie’s Angels, too, through her Flower Films banner. And if that’s true, then it would make some sense for her to want to reunite the gang. Then again, Diaz took a long breath away from the spotlight and only returned in 2025 with Back in Action. Liu has stayed busy but has branched out from action films with Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story Presence and the immigrant drama Rosemead that has earned the best reviews of her career.
The 2000s movies were a hit because they tapped into the fast-paced action and sex appeal that made the ’70s spy series so successful. Banks’ reboot tried to side step all of that and it misfired. It’ll be interesting to see who they find to direct this latest Charlie’s Angels revival, and if they understand the assignment.
