‘The Housemaid’s Secret’: Sequel To ‘The Housemaid’ Is A Go, Sydney Sweeney Expected To Return

Lionsgate isn’t wasting any time. The Housemaid (review here) has been an undeniable hit, earning an impressive $133M worldwide, opening on the same weekend as Avatar: Fire & Ash. And now it’s officially getting a sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, with a start date planned for later this year. Expected to return are director Paul Feig, star Sydney Sweeney, and co-star Michele Morrone.

When the film was first announced, I said to expect Lionsgate to turn it into a franchise, and that’s what it’s done. This isn’t much of a surprise. The films are based on a trilogy of bestselling books by Freida McFadden. Lionsgate revealed in a press release that development on the sequel had been ongoing for months.

The Housemaid’s Secret was published in 2023. Here’s a summary of the book, which continues the story of Sweeney’s character, Millie Calloway…

“A psychological thriller continuing the story of Millie Calloway, who first appeared in “The Housemaid.” The narrative takes place in the Garrick household and involves secrets and deception. Millie navigates her new environment and encounters unsettling discoveries, driven by instincts informed by her past experiences. The book maintains suspense and intrigue familiar to McFadden’s readers. It serves as both a sequel and a suitable starting point for newcomers to the series. Fans of domestic suspense might find the story engaging and fast-paced.”

Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted The Housemaid for theaters, will return to pen the sequel. Expect new additions to the cast to be named soon, because Sweeney needs somebody to kill in this one, right?
