Box Office: ‘Zootopia 2’ Hops To Record-Breaking $556M Global Debut

  1. Zootopia 2 (review)- $96.8M/$156M

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and after nine years, audiences were very fond of Zootopia 2. Disney’s obviously anticipated sequel scored huge $96.8M opening weekend, and $156M domestic when taking in the full 5-day holiday. But it’s overseas where the biggest numbers came in. China accounted for a massive $272M as part of a $400M international total. Combined, the $556M worldwide number is the biggest ever for an animated feature. The film is poised to become the second of 2025 to cross the $1B after Lilo & Stitch. And if Avatar: Fire and Ash does the same, what a year that will be for Disney.

2. Wicked: For Good– $62.8M/$270.4M

Last week’s champ, Wicked: For Good, had a hefty bite taken out of it by Zootopia 2. Still, it managed another $62.8M and a 57% drop. That’s good for $270M domestic, slightly ahead of where Wicked was this time last year.

3. Now You See Me: Now You Don’t– $7M/$49.6M

4. Predator: Badlands– $4.8M/$85M

5. The Running Man– $3.7M/$34.2M

6. Eternity (review)- $3.1M/$5.2M

A24 released the fantasy romcom Eternity into 1,348 locations, earning $5.2M across the five-day weekend. The film starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner centers on a woman who must choose between her two late husbands who to spend the afterlife with. I’m a sucker for this kind of movie, so I was hoping for a bigger number. The reviews have been solid, with critical on RT holding at 75%, while audiences liked it slightly better at 90%.

7. Rental Family– $2.1M/$7.3M

8. Hamnet (review)- $880K/$1.3M

Focus Features gave a soft rollout of 119 theaters to Chloe Zhao’s Shakespeare drama, Hamnet, which has been earning rave reviews for months. Oscar buzz is swirling for Zhao, along with stars Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, which we could see boost numbers when the film opens wider next week.

10. Sisu: Road to Revenge– $810K/$4.1M
