A Miss Piggy Movie Is On The Way From Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, And Cole Escola

File this under news nobody expected today.  A Muppets movie centered on Miss Piggy is in the works, and it’s coming from producers Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, and Tony Award winner Cole Escola. The movie will be with Walt Disney Pictures, where the Muppet franchise has been since 2004.

Escola, who will be seen in season three of Netflix’s One Piece, will write the screenplay. They became a sensation with huge Broadway success of their Abe Lincoln spoof, Oh, Mary!

Seriously, how the Hell did this thing come together???

Lawrence revealed the news to Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers on their Las Culturistas podcast. She was there promoting this week’s release of Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love, in which she stars alongside Robert Pattinson.

“I don’t know if I can announce this, but I am just going to…Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it,” Lawrence said.

When asked if she and Stone will also appear in the film, Lawrence replied that they must because they’ve never worked together before, “I think so. We have to.”

The Muppets were created by Jim Henson in 1955, becoming popular for appearances on Sesame Street and The Muppets Show, the latter debuting in 1976. The first Muppets movie was released in 1979. After being acquired by Disney, a hit movie, The Muppets, was released in 2011, followed by Muppets Most Wanted in 2014. Disney also attempted a series inspired by The Office, but it only lasted one season in 2016.

Presumably, Kermit, Gonzo, Fozzie and the gang will be showing up. You know Miss Piggy can’t stay too long away from her Kermie! [Variety]
