New ‘Project Hail Mary’ Trailer Is Thrilling But Gives Biggest Twist Away

Having already conquered deep space in Damien Chazelle’s First Man, Ryan Gosling suits up to play astronaut in a very different kind of movie. Project Hail Mary is based on the book by The Martian author Andy Weir, and it’s a similar mix of sci-fi technical jargon, fantasy, and high adventure, with Gosling tasked with saving the world from a dying sun.

Project Hail Mary is the first movie in over a decade to be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard returns to pen the story of Ryland Grace, a science teacher sent into space to figure out why Earth’s sun is dying. There’s a problem, though, in that Ryland wakes up with no memory of himself or his mission.

Gosling is joined in the cast by Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Lionel Boyce, and Ken Leung.

SYNOPSIS: Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.

The trailers for this keep getting better, capturing the edge-of-your-seat thrills, humor, and puzzling mysteries that make Weir’s book such a page-turner. I wouldn’t have spoiled so much of the story, but if it gets people to pay for a ticket, then so be it.

Amazon MGM Studios will release Project Hail Mary in theaters on March 20th 2026.
