‘Gremlins 3’ Set For November 2027, Chris Columbus To Write And Direct

Warner Bros. has been trying to get a third Gremlins movie going for years. The studio has been inching its way in that direction, including an animated prequel series that’s been running on HBO Max for two seasons. But now it’s official, Gremlins 3 is a “go” with two huge names attached.

WBD CEO David Zaslav confirmed the news yesterday during an earnings call, but we reported on Gremlins 3 back in August. Original director Joe Dante won’t be returning, but the 1984 film’s writer Chris Columbus will direct and produce. Not only that, but Steven Spielberg will exec-produce via Amblin Entertainment. Columbus also co-wrote the screenplay Final Destination: Bloodlines duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein.

The original Gremlins centered on a family that acquires a Mogwai, an adorable furry creature, from an aging antique dealer. But the Mogwai, named Gizmo, comes with strict rules that must be followed. Never expose it to sunlight, never get it wet, and never feed it after midnight. When these rules are broken, the Mogwai spawns destructive gremlins that proceed to wreck the neighborhood. The sequel, released six years later was divisive for being a parody of its predecessor’s horror aspects, and for taking more of a comedic approach.

Gremlins 3 will hit theaters on November 19th 2027. Gremlins 2: The New Batch was in 1990, just in case you wanted to feel really old like I do. Zach Galligan has talked up a new movie for quite a while, so it seems like he’s got to return in some way. And maybe someone will reach out to Phoebe Cates to see if she’s too busy to hang out with Gizmo one more time? [via Variety]
