1. Regretting You– $8.1M/$27.5M
The second-weakest box office weekend of the year, with zero new releases, opened the door for Regretting You to make the leap from #3 to #1 with $8.1M. That said, it’s still the lowest-grossing #1 movie of the year behind the $8.8M by Novocaine back in March.
2. Black Phone 2– $8M/$61.4M
The Mason Thames domination continues! Black Phone 2 fell just short of Regretting You with $8M, falling just 38% in its third week. The $61.4M domestic total is pretty close to what the original had at this same point in 2021. Worldwide, Scott Derrickson’s horror sequel has $104M.
3. Chainsaw Man: The Movie– $6M/$30.7M
As expected, the excitement for Sony Pictures’ release of Chainsaw Man was frontloaded, as last week’s #1 film dropped to #3 after falling 66%. Still, nobody is complaining about the worldwide haul of $138M and the continued presence of anime as a major draw here in the States.
4. KPop Demon Hunters– $5.3M/$24.3M
Netflix pulled a treat out of its bag for Halloween weekend by re-releasing its most-watched movie ever, KPop Demon Hunters, back into theaters. However, the excitement level just wasn’t the same as its massive two-day $19M haul in August. This time around, the musical phonomenon earned just $5.3M over three days.
5. Bugonia– $4.8M/$5.8M
Focus Features expanded Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest Bugonia into 2,043 theaters and brought in $4.8M. This is a faster expansion than Lanthimos’ previous efforts with Emma Stone, including his highest-earner, Poor Things, which had the benefit of Oscar buzz powering its run to $34.55M domestic and $117M worldwide. That doesn’t seem to be the case this time around as reviews have been positive, but not overwhelmingly so.
6. Back to the Future– $4.7M
The 40th anniversary re-release of Back to the Future did incredibly well for Universal Pictures, bringing in $4.7M. That might buy you one or two DeLoreans.
7. Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere– $3.8M/$16.2M
8. Tron: Ares– $2.8M/$67.8M
9. Stitch Head– $2.1M/$2.4M
Briarcliff Entertainment released the animated horror comedy Stitch Head into 2100 theaters, where it earned $2.1M. The adapation of Guy Bass’s graphic novel features the voices of Asa Butterfield and Joel Fry, and has received generally positive reviews from critics. This would seem to be the right time of year for a movie like this, but there just wasn’t enough awareness of its Halloween release.
10. Good Fortune- $1.4M/$14.6M
