‘The Thing With Feathers’ Trailer: Grief Appears To Benedict Cumberbatch As A Feathered Friend

Why is it that some of the worst aspects of life choose to manifest to us as birds? There’s the spirit of vengeance in The Crow; in the 2023 film Tuesday it’s Death that appears to Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a size-altering macaw; and now in Dylan Southern’s The Thing with Feathers it’s Grief that flies in to guide Benedict Cumberbatch through a recent tragedy.

Written and directed by Southern, The Thing with Feathers stars Cumberbatch as a father with two sons, grieving over the recent death of his wife. His grip on reality begins to break as he deals with an unfinished work project, and the appearance of a mysterious crow that won’t leave him alone.

The film is based on Max Porter’s book, Grief Is the Thing with Feathers. David Thewliss voices the crow, joined in the cast by Sam Spruell, Vinette Robinson, plus Richard and Henry Boxall.

SYNOPSIS: Left to raise two young sons after the unexpected death of his wife, Dad’s life begins to unravel. Grief is messy and chaotic enough as it is, but when it takes the form of an unhinged and unwanted house guest – Crow – taunting him from the shadows, things start to spiral out of control…but maybe that’s exactly what Dad needs.

The Thing with Feathers opens in theaters November 28th from Briarcliff Entertainment.
