We only learned last summer that Gareth Evans (of The Raid and Gangs of London fame) was directing a remake of 1967 yakuza film noir A Colt Is My Passport. And what do you know? Quietly, he has already wrapped shooting on it! And with that news we’re also learning of the full cast, which is full of actors who have worked with Evans or with one another before.
Evans cast his Gangs of London actor Sope Dirisu to star in A Colt Is My Passport, joined by Tim Roth, Sing Street duo Jack Reynor and Lucy Boynton, and Bridgerton actor Victor Alli.
Heavily inspired by the French New Wave movement, the original film centered on a contract killer and his partner who are hired by a yakuza boss to assassinate a former partner, only for the job to go south. Evans’ reimagining transports the action to 1978 Detroit.
This is a project Evans has been circling for a few years, ever since he first saw the film during the pandemic.
Evans most recently directed Tom Hardy in the ultra-violent Netflix thriller, Havoc, which has pretty much disappeared since its release. A Colt Is My Passport is an Amazon/MGM and Orion Pictures collab, and hopefully they’ll bring it to theaters. [Deadline]
