There’s been a lot of talk about Gremlins 3 over the last week. Zach Galligan, star of the original classic movies, recently revealed at Comic-Con Manchester [via GamesRadar] that Warner Bros. is gung-ho for the long-awaited sequel to happen. Not only that, but the script is on producer Steven Spielberg’s desk, just waiting for his approval.
“After 35 years, they’ve come up with a script,” Galligan said. “Warner Bros. is incredibly interested in doing it, apparently it’s waiting on Mr. Spielberg to read it and approve it. But you can thank the success of ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.’”
Well, now we know who wrote that script. Jeff Sneider reports that it was Chris Columbus, writer of the original Gremlins in 1984. Columbus is also in line to direct the film, stepping in for Joe Dante who isn’t involved at all. A shame about that. Dante hasn’t directed anything since Burying the Ex in 2014.
Gremlins 3 has been through so many different iterations over the years that it wasn’t a given that Columbus’ screenplay would see it through. But it has, and now it’s up to Spielberg, who will produce through Amblin Entertainment as he has since the beginning, to give it the green light. Columbus has said the Gremlins won’t be CGI, either, with an emphasis on practical effects and puppetry.
