Ryan Coogler Intended ‘Sinners’ As A Standalone Film, Sequel Rumors In Doubt

A few days ago, news began to spread that Ryan Coogler and Warner Bros. were beginning to set in motion Sinners 2, after the film passed $350M worldwide. Not bad for an original, R-rated vampire movie. Well, that’s actually up in the air now based on Coogler’s own words.

DarkHorizons heard from studio reps who have denied the rumor of a Sinners sequel. That said, the more compelling evidence comes from Coogler himself. Back in April he did an interview with Ebony Magazine in which he shot down the idea of Sinners being the start of a franchise…

“I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me, and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.”

“I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees, and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.”

Okay, so I was among the first to point out that this interview was BEFORE the release of Sinners. Coogler might’ve been in a totally different mindset then, because nobody expected the film to be such a huge hit. He might’ve gone into the film intending for it to be a standalone effort, but big money can change one’s perspective.

So let’s see where this goes. The conclusion of Sinners leaves the door open to further stories set in that universe, and it’s clear that audiences want more. We’ll see what happens.
