1. Thunderbolts*– $33.1M/$128.4M
Studios ran away from the second week of Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, and it held on to the top spot with $33.1M, a 55% drop. Something tells me these numbers were boosted by Marvel’s unveiling of The New Avengers as the film’s actual title, and the apparent hiring of director Jake Schreier for its X-Men reboot. The worldwide total sits at $272M which is slightly lower than Captain America: Brave New World after two weeks.
2. Sinners– $21.1M/$214.4M
3. A Minecraft Movie– $7.9M/$408.9M
WB’s smash hit A Minecraft Movie has now moved past $900M globally.
4. The Accountant 2– $6M/$50.8M
5. Clown in a Cornfield (review)- $3.6M
IFC and Shudder released the buzzy horror Clown in a Cornfield into 2200 theaters for a $3.6M start. The film by Tucker & Dale vs. Evil director Eli Craig and based on Adam Cesare’s book was largely marketed to the Terrifier crowd, but the reaction hasn’t been great as it currently holds a 73% critic rating on RT and just 64% from audiences.
6. Shadow Force (review)- $2.05M
Joe Carnahan’s latest actioner Shadow Force opened weakly with just $2M. The Kerry Washington/Omar Sy film was not well-reviewed overall, sitting at just 30% on RT from critics although audiences have it at 82%. I thought it was fine but underwhelming.
7. Fight or Flight (review)- $2.001M
Vertical released the killer Josh Hartnett action-comedy Fight or Flight into 2100 theaters but it failed to take off with just $2M. The film which I describe as Bullet Train at 30,000 feet, was well-reviewed by critics with 76% on RT and audiences thought it was alright, too, with 74%. Like Shadow Force, I feel like this one will find a bigger audience on digital.
8. Until Dawn– $2M/$18M
9. The Amateur– $1.1M/$38.9M
10. The King of Kings– $680K/$59M
