Nobody bought for a second that John Wick was really dead at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, but it wasn’t until Cinemacon that we learned for sure that a fifth movie was in the works. Not only would Keanu Reeves return as the Baba Yaga, but so would director Chad Stahelski.
So what do you do now that John Wick has wrapped up his beef with the High Table? Stahelski talked with Empire Magazine and revealed that the next story will be something completely new and different…
“The saga of ‘John Wick’ was pretty wrapped up, ” Stahelski said. “So the only way to do a 5 is to have a new story that involves John Wick. It’s not a continuation with The High Table. John dealt with his grief. It will be really different, and everybody [will] see the trailer and go, ‘Holy fuck… I gotta see that.’”
“The ‘John Wick’ TV show and the animation are big priorities,” Stahelski confirmed. “Our idea is to try some things and explore some threads, and use those two properties to catapult us forward into the ideas for ‘John 5.’”
Considering the John Wick universe has earned over $1B globally, it’s easy to see why Lionsgte keeps expanding it. Along with Len Wiseman’s Ballerina, an action film starring Ana de Armas coming to theaters in June, there’s also Donnie Yen’s spinoff Caine that he’ll direct and star in. As Stahelski mentioned, there’s also a TV series and animated project in the works.
