Maybe I’m biased, but Transformers One was the best Transformers movie in years, and that was due in large part to director Josh Cooley, who also directed Toy Story 4. When it comes to animation, Cooley knows his stuff, and it makes him a good choice to help Universal revive the Lego Movie franchise, along with another guy you might’ve heard of: Keanu Reeves.
This is a reunion for Reeves and Cooley, who worked together on Toy Story 4, the film that launched the popular Duke Kaboom character that the John Wick star voiced. Details are being kept secret on this new project, but it’s being described as a hybrid of live-action and animation.
You might recall that Warner Bros. had the Lego film rights for years, and produced blockbuster The Lego Movie in 2014. The bloom had started to come off the room by the sequel, 2019’s The Lego Movie: The Second Part. Other films in the franchise included The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie. Universal acquired the Lego rights in 2020, and this is the first major attempt to do anything with it.
Reeves is no stranger to animated roles, and recently signed on to voice a stop-motion samurai epic, Hidari, from director Masashi Kawamura.
