Sylvester Stallone has spoken often about bringing back the Rambo franchise for a sixth movie, following 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood. Sly has also cast doubts about playing the role again himself, and instead focusing on an earlier time in Rambo’s forever war. Well, it seems as if those plans are finally starting to come together, and with, I think, the perfect director to do it. However, Stallone isn’t involved.
Deadline reports that John Rambo is in the works and will be hitting the Cannes market. Genre studio Millennium Media, known for the Expendables and Hitman’s Bodyguard franchises, are developing the film with Sisu and Big Game director Jalmari Helander. The film will have a script from Black Adam writers Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani.
While plot details are under wraps, the story will follow a young John Rambo during the Vietnam War when he established his tough-as-nails reputation. The search is on for an actor to play the iconic role of Rambo.
Created by author David Morrell in the novel First Blood, the character first hit the big screen in 1982 as a transient Green Beret forced into the mountains by a cruel sheriff and the local cops, only for the soldier to wage an escalating war of violence against them. The Rambo franchise has earned over $800M worldwide across five movies.
All that said, it’s really disappointing to not have Stallone involved. He has spoken about all of these classic movie character franchises that he doesn’t own any rights to, and Rambo is sadly one of them. We’ll see where this goes, with production set to begin in October.
