‘Bugonia’: Yorgos Lanthimos’ Sci-Fi Comedy With Emma Stone Arrives In October

We knew that Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film with Emma Stone would be arriving this year. Well, now we know when Focus Features will release Bugonia in theaters: October 24th in limited New York and Los Angeles theaters, followed by a wide expansion on October 31st. The film had previously been scheduled for November 7th.

Bugonia, Lanthimos’ latest film with Stone following The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness, is a remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2003 sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet! Will Tracy (The Menu) wrote the screenplay.

The story sees two conspiracy-obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced she is an alien intent on destroying Planet Earth.

Also in the cast are Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone.

Expect Bugonia to get a high-profile festival premiere this fall, similar to what Poor Things received at Venice as a big awards season boost. Focus Features is expecting this to be a bounce back film for Lanthimos after the cool reception to Kinds of Kindness.

Also coming up for Focus Features in 2025 are Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley, and Craig Brewer’s Song Sung Blue, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. Other upcoming films include Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme; Ronan Day-Lewis’ feature debut Anemone, starring and co-written by Daniel Day-Lewis; Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t!, starring Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza, and Chris Evans; and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the final installment of the global hit franchise.
