‘Bugonia’: Jesse Plemons Joins Emma Stone In Yorgos Lanthimos’ Sci-Fi Comedy Remake

The combo of Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone has proven to be a powerful one, and following their latest, Kinds of Kindness‘ premiering at Cannes, their next collaboration has found a new home and co-star. The formerly-untitled film is now titled Bugonia, and has landed at Focus Features for distribution. Not only that, but Stone will be joined in the cast by Jesse Plemons, fresh off his terrifying role in Civil War.

Plemons, who is also part of the Kinds of Kindness cast with Stone, is only the second cast member on the film. Bugonia is based on the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet, and centers on two conspiracy-fueled men who kidnap the CEO of a company, convinced that she is an alien bent on destroying Earth.

The film will have a script by Will Tracy (The Menu), making it the first movie Lanthimos won’t have taken a pen to.

This is a big get for Focus Features, as Lanthimos films have typically been distributed by A24 or Searchlight.

“Yorgos Lanthimos is a cinematic visionary with a singular style that has captivated audiences worldwide,” Peter Kujawski, Chairman of Focus Features, said in a statement. “We could not be more excited to partner with him, Emma, and the incredible teams at Element, Square Peg, and CJ ENM to reimagine this twisted and darkly funny story.”

Expect Bugonia to begin filming later this year.
