‘Broke’ Interview: Wyatt Russell And Dennis Quaid Talk Bronc Riding Drama

Nobody goes into bareback bronc riding ignorant of the impact it’ll have on their long-term health. It’s a dangerous sport, as all forms of bronco riding are, because you just never know what those deadly animals might do. But for those who do take part, it’s a calling. And that is certainly the case for True Brandywine, the character played by Wyatt Russell in Broke, the new drama from director Carlyle Eubank. For True, his failing health and flagging rodeo career aren’t enough to steer him away from what he loves to do, but the broken relationships and a battle to survive a severe blizzard might.

Broke stars Wyatt Russell, who is red-hot right now after his role in Thunderbolts*, and the great Dennis Quaid who plays True’s father, George Brandywine, a former bronc rider himself. The Russell and Quaid names are well-known to the Western genre, and to horse-riding in general. Leading up to the film’s release, I had the great opportunity to sit down and talk with both actors about Broke, the authenticity of Eubank’s portrayal of bronco riding, and their own commitment to making this film as genuine as possible.

Here’s the synopsis: BROKE is a contemporary western following the story of True Brandywine (Wyatt Russell), a bareback bronc rider clinging to his fading rodeo career. When True gets trapped in a freak spring blizzard, he must battle injuries, illness, and the bitter cold. While fighting for his survival, True is forced to face his choices and the circumstances that led him to his tenuous situation.
