What’s Vince Vaughn been up to lately? He hasn’t actually starred in a feature film in four years (Queenpins in 2021), but he’s back and with Netflix for Nonnas, a restaurant comedy from The Perks of Being a Wallflower director, Stephen Chbosky.
In Nonnas, Vaughn plays a man who opens an Italian restaurant using the cherished recipes of his late mother and grandmother. The screenplay is by Liz Maccie.
The film is based on the true story of Joe Scaravella, owner of the Staten Island restaurant Enoteca Maria, where nonnas (grandmothers) work as chefs. It’s a sweet story and a change of pace for Vaughn who had been leaning into his size and physicality for intimidating roles in Freaky, Dragged Across Concrete, and Brawl in Cell Block 99.
Joining Vaughn in the cast are Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, Joe Manganiello, Drea de Matteo, Campbell Scott, Michael Rispoli, Linda Cardellini, and Susan Sarandon.
SYNOPSIS: Nonnas follows Joe (Vaughn), who, after losing his mom and grandmother, turns to their generations-old recipes for solace and direction. With the money from his mom’s insurance and a little help from his friends, he opens Enoteca Maria, an old-school Italian spot that staffs four grandmothers, or “nonnas,” from different cities in Italy, who share their dishes with the neighborhood.
Nonnas hits Netflix on May 9th.
