‘Miami Vice’ Reboot On The Way From ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Director Joseph Kosinski

Crockett and Tubbs are coming back. Daniel Richtman broke the news, later confirmed by THR, that a new Miami Vice reboot is in the works and it’ll be directed by Top Gun: Maverick‘s Joseph Kosinski.

As if the Kosinski aspect of the story isn’t cool enough, we also learned that Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) will write the screenplay. That’s one Hell of a combo, promising this Miami Vice will both look amazing and be extremely compelling.

Miami Vice is one of those quintessential 1980s TV shows, and made instant stars out of Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. They played cool as ice Miami-Dade detective Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs, who solved crimes and looked slick while doing it. The show was more of a vibe and less like a police procedural.

In 2006, Michael Mann directed a feature film reboot starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. It was a modest success, earning $164M, but was panned by critics at the time. Years later, though, it quietly became a cult favorite.

Coming up next for Kosinski is F1, starring Brad Pitt, which opens this summer. Following that is his UFO whistleblower film, and he’ll take on Miami Vice after that.
