Over the weekend at WrestleMania 41, John Cena became the winningest World Heavyweight Champion “ever” with 17 title reigns, defeating Cody Rhodes. But can he survive being the President of the United States in a new action-comedy starring Idris Elba as the British Prime Minister? We’ll find out in the new Prime Video film, Heads of State.
That’s right, it’s a reunion of The Suicide Squad as John “Peacemaker” Cena and Idris “Bloodsport” Elba team up for Heads of State. Cena plays the POTUS with Elba as the U.K. Prime Minister, political rivals who must learn to trust one another when they become targets of a deadly foreign threat.
It sounds incredibly silly, which is exactly how it should be.
Joining them is a fun supporting cast of Amazon favorites including Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Citadel), Jack Quaid (The Boys), plus Paddy Considine (House of the Dragon), Sarah Niles (Ted Lasso), Stephen Root (Office Space), Richard Coyle (Coupling), and Carla Gugino (Spy Kids).
The film is directed by Ilya Naishuller, the Russian filmmaker who is making serious moves in the action genre. Naishuller previously helmed Hardcore Henry and the Bob Odenkirk hit, Nobody. Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol writers Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec co-wrote the script with Harrison Query.
SYNOPSIS: In the action-comedy “Heads of State,” the UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Idris Elba) and U.S. President Will Derringer (John Cena) have a not-so-friendly and very public rivalry that jeopardizes their countries’ “special relationship.” But when they become the targets of a powerful and ruthless foreign adversary, who proves more than a match for the two leaders’ security forces, they are begrudgingly forced to rely on the only two people they can trust: each other. Ultimately allied with the brilliant MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), they must go on the run and find a way to work together long enough to thwart a global conspiracy that threatens the entire free world.
Heads of State hits Prime Video on July 2nd.
