Boxing movies are the crown jewel of sports movies as far as I’m concerned. No other competitive sport is better at reflecting one’s fight against all that stands against them. And there have been plenty of boxing dramas recently with The Fire Inside and Day of the Fight two excellent examples. Now we can add Salvable to the list, a film that stars Toby Kebbell and Shia LaBeouf.
Directed by Björn Franklin and Johnny Marchetta with a script by Franklin, Salvable stars Kebbell as an aging boxer who falls back in with a bad crowd when his dreams and family relationships are on the ropes.
Kebbell and LaBeouf received training in the sweet science from retired former world champion Carl Froch, who also has a small cameo role. Others in the cast include James Cosmo, Michael Socha, Elaine Cassidy, Aiysha Hart, Nell Hudson, and Barry Ward.
SYNOPSIS: Shia LaBeouf and Toby Kebbell star in an emotional, action-packed film about a prize fighter’s battles both inside and outside the ring. When a battered boxer past his prime finds his dreams and his relationships on the ropes, he falls back in with a dangerous crowd and has to take the biggest swing of his life to reclaim his hope and his family.
Lionsgate opens Salvable in theaters, digital, and On Demand on May 2nd. That title is atrocious and I wish there was time for it to be changed.
