The conclusion to John Wick: Chapter 4 was left ambiguous enough that nobody knew whether the Baba Yaga was truly alive or dead after his duel with Caine. With the film earning $440M worldwide, I have a pretty good idea. That said, Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski have kept it close to the vest, and have promised to take a long break if there’s to be another sequel at all. Lionsgate execs, on the other hand? They can’t stop telling folks that John Wick 5 is happening and have been doing so for over a year. And now there’s one more.
Speaking with Comicbook, Lionsgate EVP Jenefer Brown reiterated plans for John Wick 5. What’s interesting about this is she has no idea whether Reeves or Stehelski is coming back, or if Wick is alive or dead.
“Up next, of course, is Ballerina, which is our first spin-off movie and [we] can’t wait for that to release to the world. Of course, we’ve announced we’re working on a fifth John Wick film. I think there are more spinoffs to come, a TV series, video game. We’ve shared that we’re developing a fifth John Wick film. [John Wick] may be [dead]. We are all on bated breath waiting to find out.”
Reeves does appear in the Ballerina spinoff starring Ana de Armas, as it’s a prequel set between John Wicks 3 & 4. There’s more from this franchise on the way, as well, including Caine, starring Donnie Yen’s popular blind assassin. Yen is reportedly in talks to direct that film, as well.
As for Stahelski, he has been trying for ages to get a Highlander reboot off the ground with star Henry Cavill. He’s also been busy with a Rainbow Six movie and video game adaptation Ghosts of Tsushima. In short, John Wick could continue but if it does, Stahelski might turn the reins to another.
