Box Office: ‘A Working Man’ Outworks ‘Snow White’ With $15M Debut

  1. A Working Man (review)- $15.2M

It’s been a tough year for action movies thus far, so leave it to a throwback Jason Statham flick to turn the tide. A Working Man surprisingly bested Snow White‘s second weekend with $15.2M. That’s about $1M less than what The Beekeeper did last year on its way to $162M worldwide. The film received middling reviews from critics, 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences hold it at 90%. Worldwide the Sly Stallone-penned actioner has $30M.

2. Snow White– $14.2M/$66.8M

Disney’s Snow White melted in its second weekend, falling 66% and earning just $14.2M. There’s no other way to spin this other than a disaster and it has been almost right from the beginning. Blame the stars Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, or the many delays, reshoots, and bad press, whatever, but $143M globally after two weeks is about as bad as it gets.

3. The Chosen: Last Supper– $11.4M

Fathom Events’ release of the first half of The Chosen‘s fifth season in feature format was a huge faith-based hit with $11.4M. The release of season four on the big screen overperformed last year, as well.

4. The Woman in the Yard (review)- $9.4M

It was a solid start for Blumhouse’s horror The Woman in the Yard. A reunion of Carry-On director Jaume Collet-Serra and star Danielle Deadwyler, the film about a mysterious black-clad figure tormenting a widow and her children opened with $9.4M despite poor reviews from critics.

5. Death Of a Unicorn (review)- $5.7M

It was the second failed genre comedy from A24 in a row, as Death Of a Unicorn opened to just $5.7M. Reviews weren’t great from critics or audiences for the film led by usually bankable stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, who play a father and daughter who accidentally run over a unicorn with horrific results. This follows A24’s release of Opus, the Ayo Edibiri thriller-comedy that has just $1.9M after three weeks.

6. Princess Mononoke– $4M

GKids’ IMAX release of Studio Ghibli’s 1997 classic Princess Mononoke scored a massive $4M in just 330 theaters. That’s a whopping $12K per site average, better than any film in the top 20.

7. Captain America: Brave New World– $2.8M/$196.5M

8. Black Bag– $2.1M/$18.7M

9. Mickey 17– $1.9M/$43.5M

10. Novocaine– $1.4M/$18.7M

Also…Sony Pictures Classics opened the Steve Coogan drama The Penguin Lessons (review) in just over 1000 theaters for just $1.2M.

The well-reviewed musical rom-com The Ballad of Wallis Island (review) opened small in just four theaters and made $92K. That bodes well for the slow expansion beginning this weekend.

The Bill Murray/Naomi Watts Great Dane drama The Friend began its limited rollout in two theaters and earned 66K, with an expansion to follow. [BoxOfficeMojo]
